misdiagnose
Identify illness incorrectly
To misdiagnose is to identify a condition incorrectly—diagnosing the wrong illness, or failing to recognize the right one: The doctor misdiagnosed her anxiety as a heart condition.
The term applies beyond medicine to any faulty identification of a problem: The mechanic misdiagnosed the engine trouble.
