minority party
Smaller legislative bloc
The minority party in a legislative body is the political party holding fewer seats than the majority party.
In the U.S.
Congress, the minority party has less control over committee assignments, floor time, and the legislative agenda, though it can still influence debate and occasionally block legislation: Republicans were the minority party in the Senate for two years.
