mine fire
Subterranean coal combustion
A mine fire is a fire burning in an underground mine, often in coal seams where it can smolder for decades or even centuries.
These fires may start from lightning, spontaneous combustion, or human activity, and prove nearly impossible to extinguish once established.
The Centralia mine fire in Pennsylvania has burned since 1962, forcing evacuation of the town above it.
