milksnake

Coral mimic reptile

A milksnake is a nonvenomous North American snake with colorful banded patterns of red, black, and white or yellow.

The name comes from the folk belief that these snakes sucked milk from cows—they're actually found in barns because they hunt rodents.

Milksnakes are often confused with venomous coral snakes, which have similar coloring.

Also spelled milk snake.
