memory verse
Learned biblical passage
A memory verse is a passage from scripture, typically short, that someone commits to memory as part of religious education or devotion.
Sunday schools and Bible study groups assign memory verses to help participants internalize teachings: This week's memory verse is John 3:16.
The practice is most common in Christian traditions but appears in other faiths as well.
