meetinghouses

Communal worship buildings

Meetinghouses are buildings used for public gatherings, especially for worship.

The term is most associated with Quakers and early New England Puritans, who avoided calling their places of worship "churches." A meetinghouse might also serve civic functions—town meetings, community assemblies.

The old meetinghouse still stands at the center of the village green.
