media scrum
Journalist pack surrounds
A media scrum is a chaotic cluster of journalists surrounding a newsworthy figure, shouting questions and jostling for position.
Unlike a formal press conference, scrums are unstructured and often aggressive—reporters crowd around someone emerging from a courthouse or government building: The minister faced a media scrum after the vote.
The term borrows from rugby's scrum, where players pack tightly together.
