maternal grandmother
Mom's own mom
A maternal grandmother is one's mother's mother.
The term distinguishes her from the paternal grandmother (father's mother) when clarity is needed: My maternal grandmother immigrated from Poland.
In casual speech, people usually just say "grandmother" or "grandma" unless specifying which side of the family.
