matchplay
Win holes, not strokes
Matchplay is a format of competition, especially in golf, where scoring is based on holes won rather than total strokes.
Each hole is a separate contest; whoever completes it in fewer strokes wins that hole.
The player who wins more holes wins the match.
This contrasts with stroke play, where the lowest cumulative score wins.
Also spelled as two words: match play.
