martyring

Suffering for belief

Martyring is putting someone to death for their beliefs, or treating them as a martyr.

The word often carries skepticism about whether the suffering is genuine or self-imposed: Stop martyring yourself over every small sacrifice.

To martyr someone can also mean to make them into a symbol by killing them: The execution only martyred him in the eyes of his followers.
