marquee players
Team's biggest names
Marquee players are the star athletes whose names draw fans and sell tickets—the ones featured prominently in advertising, like names on a theater marquee.
A team builds around its marquee players, paying them accordingly: The franchise traded three prospects for a marquee player.
The term extends beyond sports to any field's biggest names.
