marine reptiles

Sea-dwelling cold-blooded vertebrates

Marine reptiles are reptiles adapted to life in the ocean.

The term most often refers to prehistoric groups—ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, mosasaurs—that dominated Mesozoic seas.

Living marine reptiles include sea turtles, sea snakes, saltwater crocodiles, and marine iguanas.

Unlike marine mammals, they are cold-blooded and typically must return to land or surface to breathe.
