manic pixie dream girl
Whimsical female catalyst
A manic pixie dream girl is a female character type in fiction—quirky, spontaneous, and whimsically eccentric—who exists primarily to inspire a brooding male protagonist toward emotional growth or self-discovery.
The term, coined in 2007, is usually critical: it describes a shallow fantasy rather than a fully realized character.
The film got criticized for its manic pixie dream girl love interest who had no arc of her own.
