lightweight wood
Buoyant craft material
Lightweight wood refers to timber with low density, making it easy to handle and work with.
Balsa is the classic example—so light it floats high and cuts like butter.
Other lightweight woods include paulownia, basswood, and cedar.
The term applies both to specific species and to any wood that's lighter than typical lumber: We need a lightweight wood for the model airplane.
