light artillery
Portable military guns
Light artillery refers to mobile field guns and howitzers small enough to be moved quickly by horses, vehicles, or soldiers.
Distinguished from heavy artillery by caliber, weight, and portability, light artillery provides close fire support to infantry rather than siege or bombardment capability.
The term applies both to the weapons themselves and to military units employing them: The light artillery advanced with the infantry column.
