library stacks
Tall book shelves
Library stacks are the shelving areas in a library where books and other materials are stored.
The term often specifically refers to sections with restricted public access, where patrons must request items rather than browse freely: The rare books are kept in the stacks.
In academic libraries, stack access may require special permission.
The stacks can also simply mean the main book storage area generally: I spent hours in the stacks researching my thesis.
