card catalogue
Alphabetized reference system
A card catalogue is a system for organizing library holdings, traditionally using index cards in drawers arranged alphabetically by author, title, and subject.
Each card contains information about a book's location and details.
The system dominated libraries until computerized databases replaced it in the late twentieth century.
Also spelled card catalog.
