letterpress printing

Inked type stamping

Letterpress printing is a technique in which raised surfaces—metal type or carved blocks—are inked and pressed against paper to transfer an image.

The oldest form of printing in the West, it dominated from Gutenberg's era until offset printing replaced it in the twentieth century.

Letterpress has seen a revival among artists and boutique printers who value its tactile impression and craftsmanship: hand-set letterpress wedding invitations.
