leg cramps
Painful muscle contractions
Leg cramps are sudden, involuntary muscle contractions in the leg—typically the calf—that cause sharp pain and temporary immobility.
They often strike at night or during exercise: I woke up with a terrible leg cramp.
Dehydration, overexertion, and mineral deficiencies are common culprits.
Also called charley horses.
