lateral passes
Not forward tosses
Lateral passes are throws in American and Canadian football where the ball travels sideways or backward rather than forward.
Unlike forward passes, laterals can happen anywhere on the field and any number of times per play.
The term extends to any sideways transfer of responsibility: The project kept getting lateral passes between departments until no one owned it.
