lap leader
Current first place
The lap leader is the driver or competitor currently in first place during a race, leading the field on the current lap.
The position can change frequently as racers overtake one another: He was the lap leader for twelve consecutive laps before his tire blew.
In NASCAR and similar motorsports, lap leader statistics track how many laps each driver has led.
