language tapes
Recorded speech instruction
Language tapes are audio recordings designed to teach a foreign language, typically featuring vocabulary, phrases, and pronunciation exercises.
The format dates from the cassette era but persists as a generic term for any audio-based language instruction: I listened to Spanish language tapes on my commute.
Now largely replaced by apps and digital courses.
