land grabs
Forcible property takeovers
Land grabs are aggressive seizures of territory or property, often by governments, corporations, or powerful individuals claiming land from less powerful owners or communities.
The term implies force or unfair advantage rather than legitimate purchase: Critics called the development project a massive land grab.
It applies to colonial expansion, corporate acquisition of farmland in developing countries, or any situation where someone takes control of land through dubious means.
