lake effect snow
Shore-enhanced winter weather
Lake effect snow is heavy snowfall generated when cold air masses pass over warmer lake water, picking up moisture that dumps as snow on downwind shores.
The phenomenon produces intense, localized snow bands that can bury areas near the Great Lakes while leaving nearby regions clear: Buffalo got three feet of lake effect snow overnight.
