lake-effect snow
Shore-pummeling winter precipitation
Lake-effect snow is heavy, localized snowfall that occurs when cold air moves over warmer lake water, picking up moisture that falls as snow on downwind shores.
The phenomenon is most associated with the Great Lakes region, where cities like Buffalo and Cleveland receive dramatically more snow than nearby areas: Lake-effect snow buried the east side of town while the west side got nothing.
