keypunching
Punching data cards
Keypunching is the process of entering data by punching holes in cards using a keypunch machine—a method of data input that dominated computing from the mid-20th century until the 1970s.
The operator would type on a keyboard, and the machine would punch corresponding patterns of holes into stiff paper cards that could be read by computers.
She spent years keypunching data for the census bureau.
Now largely obsolete, replaced by direct keyboard entry.
