keiki

Island child, colloquially

Keiki is a Hawaiian word meaning child or baby, used in English primarily in two contexts.

In everyday speech, especially in Hawaii, keiki refers affectionately to children: The beach was full of keiki building sandcastles.

In orchid cultivation, a keiki is a small plantlet that grows from the stem or flower spike of a parent plant, essentially a baby orchid that can be separated and potted once it develops roots.
