katydid

Leaf-mimicking chirper

A katydid is a large green grasshopper-like insect with long antennae, common in North America.

The name imitates its distinctive nighttime call—a rasping sound that seems to repeat "katydid, katy-didn't." The katydids were so loud we could barely hear each other on the porch.
