jalousies
Angled window blinds
Jalousies are window blinds or shutters made of angled horizontal slats, allowing air and light in while blocking direct sun and rain.
The slats can typically be adjusted to control ventilation: The jalousies were tilted open to catch the breeze.
Common in tropical architecture, the word comes from the French for jealousy—the slats let you see out without being seen, like a jealous lover peeking through blinds.
