interpenetrate

Pass through each other

To interpenetrate is to penetrate mutually or reciprocally—two things passing into and through each other.

The word appears in philosophy, physics, and literary criticism to describe phenomena that don't merely touch or overlap but occupy the same space: The public and private spheres interpenetrate in ways we rarely acknowledge.

Unlike simple mixing, interpenetration suggests that distinct elements maintain their identity while thoroughly pervading one another.
