interpenetration

Passing through each other

Interpenetration is the act or state of things passing into and through each other, occupying the same space or becoming mutually intertwined.

The term appears in philosophy, theology, and physics to describe how distinct entities can coexist within one another without losing their separate identities: the interpenetration of mind and body, the interpenetration of urban and rural life.

In more concrete uses, it describes physical merging: the interpenetration of roots from neighboring trees.
