intermezzos

Between-act musical pieces

Intermezzos is the plural of intermezzo, a short piece of music played between larger sections of an opera, symphony, or other extended work.

The term extends to any brief interlude or interval between main events: The afternoon tea served as an intermezzo between meetings.

In music, intermezzos may also be standalone compositions, particularly short piano pieces in the Romantic tradition.
