An insurance bet is a wager placed to offset potential losses from another bet.
In blackjack, insurance is a side bet offered when the dealer shows an ace, paying 2-to-1 if the dealer has blackjack.
More broadly, any bet designed to hedge against an unfavorable outcome: I put twenty on the other team as an insurance bet.
