insect wing

Fly's flight surface

Insect wings are the thin, membranous flight structures that extend from the thorax of most adult insects.

Unlike bird or bat wings, they contain no bones—instead, a network of veins provides support and circulation.

Most insects have two pairs: dragonfly wings, butterfly wings.

Some, like flies, have modified their hind wings into balancing organs.

Wings may be hardened into protective covers, as in beetles, or covered with scales, as in moths.
