ink sacs

Octopus defense organs

Ink sacs are organs in cephalopods—squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish—that produce and store dark fluid.

When threatened, the animal expels this ink to create a cloud that obscures its escape from predators.

The ink of cuttlefish historically provided sepia pigment for artists and writers.
