in vitro testing
Outside living organisms
In vitro testing is experimentation performed outside a living organism, typically in test tubes, petri dishes, or other laboratory containers.
The Latin means "in glass." It contrasts with in vivo testing (in living organisms) and in silico testing (computer simulation).
In vitro testing showed the compound killed cancer cells, but human trials were needed.
