immigration judge
Deportation case decider
An immigration judge is a federal official who presides over deportation and asylum proceedings in the United States.
Unlike most judges, immigration judges are employees of the Justice Department rather than the judicial branch, which has drawn criticism regarding their independence.
They decide whether non-citizens may remain in the country: The immigration judge granted her asylum claim.
