asylum case
Protection claim review
An asylum case is a legal proceeding in which someone seeks protection from persecution in their home country.
The term appears in immigration law contexts, where applicants must demonstrate credible fear of harm based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group: Her asylum case has been pending for three years.
The phrase also refers informally to the applicant themselves: The lawyer took on several asylum cases this month.
