hypoderm

Tissue beneath epidermis

Hypoderm is a shortened form of hypodermis—the layer of tissue beneath the skin in animals or the outermost cell layer of plant stems and roots.

In insects, the hypoderm secretes the exoskeleton.

The term also appears as a clipped form of hypodermic, referring to injections beneath the skin: a hypoderm needle.
