hug of death
Viral traffic collapse
A hug of death occurs when a website crashes from a sudden flood of traffic—typically after being featured on a popular site like Reddit or going viral on social media.
The attention is welcome, like a hug, but the server can't handle the embrace: The site got the Reddit hug of death and went down for hours.
