DDoS attack

Server overwhelm tactic

A DDoS attack (distributed denial-of-service attack) is a cyberattack that floods a website or server with traffic from many sources simultaneously, overwhelming its capacity and making it unavailable to legitimate users.

Unlike a simple denial-of-service attack from one source, the distributed nature—often using thousands of compromised computers (a botnet)—makes it harder to block: The company's website went down for hours during the DDoS attack.
