A hospital pass is a pass in sports—especially rugby and football—that puts the receiver in a vulnerable position, likely to be tackled hard immediately upon catching the ball.
The implication is that receiving such a pass might land you in the hospital.
The term extends to any situation where someone hands you a problem that's bound to hurt: Assigning me that failing project was a real hospital pass.
