hootches
Makeshift military quarters
Hootches is the plural of hootch, a word with two distinct meanings.
One is a slang term for cheap or illicit alcohol, especially homemade liquor: They passed around hootches brewed in the back shed.
The other, from military slang originating in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, refers to a makeshift dwelling or shelter: Soldiers built hootches from whatever materials they could scavenge.
