honorary knighthood
Foreigner's royal recognition
An honorary knighthood is a title bestowed by the British monarch on citizens of countries that do not recognize the British sovereign as head of state.
Unlike regular knighthoods, recipients cannot use the title "Sir" or "Dame" before their names, though they may place the appropriate letters after their names.
The honor recognizes significant achievements or contributions to British interests.
Bill Gates received an honorary knighthood in 2005.
