homophile

Same-sex attraction ally

Homophile is a dated term for a person who is homosexual, or as an adjective, relating to homosexuality.

It was preferred in the mid-20th century by gay rights organizations seeking a more clinical, respectable-sounding alternative to words then considered vulgar or pathological.

The homophile movement of the 1950s and 60s laid groundwork for later gay liberation.

The term fell out of favor as activists embraced more assertive identity language like gay and lesbian.
