haole

Island chain foreigner

Haole is a Hawaiian word for a non-Hawaiian person, especially a white person.

Originally neutral, simply meaning foreigner or outsider, the term has acquired different connotations depending on context and speaker.

It can be purely descriptive, but is sometimes used dismissively or pejoratively, particularly toward mainland Americans perceived as ignorant of Hawaiian culture or acting entitled.

The haole tourists didn't understand local customs.

In Hawaii, the word appears in casual conversation without necessarily carrying negative weight.
