hand stencil

Traced finger silhouette

A hand stencil is an image made by placing a hand against a surface and applying pigment around it, leaving a negative outline when the hand is removed.

The technique appears in prehistoric cave art worldwide, from France to Indonesia to Argentina: The cave walls were covered with hand stencils in red ochre.

Distinguished from a handprint, which is a positive impression made by coating the hand itself with pigment.
