half-volleys
Hit after one bounce
A half-volley is a shot in tennis, cricket, or soccer struck just after the ball bounces, catching it on the short hop.
The timing is tricky—too early and you miss, too late and it's a regular groundstroke.
In tennis: She took the return on the half-volley and drove it down the line.
The term also works as a verb: He half-volleyed the pass into the net.
