groundwood

Crushed log fibers

Groundwood is wood pulp produced by grinding logs against a rotating stone, used primarily in papermaking.

The mechanical process preserves lignin, yielding an inexpensive but lower-quality pulp that yellows over time.

Newsprint and cheap paperbacks are typically made from groundwood pulp: The pages had that distinctive groundwood smell.
