grave accent
Backwards-leaning vowel mark
A grave accent is a diacritical mark (`) that slopes downward from left to right, appearing over vowels in various languages.
In French, it distinguishes words like *où* (where) from *ou* (or) and indicates vowel quality in *père* (father).
In English, it occasionally marks a pronounced syllable that would otherwise be silent: *blessèd*, *learnèd*.
The grave accent contrasts with the acute accent (´), which slopes the opposite direction.
